On Saturday, Dec. 2, the Marshfield High School Varsity wrestlers participated in the first wrestling tournament of the season in Bolivar, Mo. MHS competed against nine other schools and managed to come out on top with the 1st place plaque.

The Varsity team spent the week preparing and improving on things that they could have done better with the last met against Rogersville, 36-33 in favor of Rogersville, earlier that week.

Along with the 1st place plaque won as a team, the top four individuals in their weight class received medals. MHS had several students place in the top four for their weight class. These included senior Nick Taylor, 2nd place for the 132 lb. weight class, sophomore Will Snider, 3rd place for the 138 lb. weight class, senior Zach Kurre, 3rd place for the 145 lb. weight class, junior Clay Wilson, 1st place for the 182 lb. weight class, junior Travin Plemmons, 1st place for the 220 lb. weight class and senior Tristen Burton took 1st place for the 285 lb. weight class.

Junior Ruger Leppert was working his way into the finals, but was unfortunately pulled from the tournament due to an unforeseen injury below the right eye. Leppert’s opponent slammed Leppert onto the mat and then proceeded to drag his face across the mat, ending in the result of a black eye. This was the only injury.

Concluding the end of the tournament, the judges announced the top four medals for each weight class and  the scores of all the schools. As second place was given to Bolivar with 186.0 points, the Varsity team celebrated with the first place win of 188.5 points.

Coach Holt “could not believe it. I thought we were in the race for second and did not realize we had moved into first [un]til our last wrestler finished.”

Varsity will participate at the Union tournament and JV will participate in the Rolla tournament on Saturday, Dec. 9. Come support the MHS wrestling team!
