A little over a year after her album “Short n’ Sweet” Sabrina Carpenter dropped her latest album “Man’s Best Friend.”
Since the album’s announcement, there’s one thing that has been a hot topic online: the album cover. Featuring Carpenter on her knees with a man pulling her hair, many online argued that the cover was anti-feminist and misogynistic. The internet’s uproar led to the creation of three alternative covers, being available on jackets of the album’s vinyls.
Following Carpenter’s fame and the controversies, people across the internet have swarmed to post their reviews of the album, and I’d like to add my own to the mix.
Bringing up “Short n’ Sweet” again, one of my favorites off of the album is “Juno,” and with similar vibes and dance pop instrumentals, my favorite on “Man’s Best Friend” is “House Tour.” I really enjoy how she just describes different things in her house in between choruses. I also enjoy the outro as well, “My house is on pretty girl avenue” being a personal favorite from the verse. I also enjoy the beginning and ending, where she says “Take your shoes off” and “So um, are you coming in or what?” respectively, alongside various other lines in the song, it adds to the vision of Carpenter giving an actual tour of her house.
Another favorite is “Nobody’s Son.” In all honesty this song’s tempo is what I expected “Tears,” another song on the album, to be. That doesn’t stop it from being a fun song though. Especially the whip in between each line of the bridge, I’m really excited to see this song live.
While I wouldn’t call it a favorite, I am a big fan of “We Almost Broke Up Again Last Night.” I would listen to this song while cruising down the road, it’s just the perfect vibes for that I think. I love the way she sings “we almost broke up again last night” as well as the outro.
This album isn’t all hits though, as one I think that’s very overhyped is “Go Go Juice.” It’s not a bad song at all, but all the times I’d heard all over Instagram kind of raised my expectations for the song since it was already so popular before I listened to it. I only really like the chorus, which was what I heard the most online, but the rest of the song just isn’t giving what I’d like from it. I do like the way she says “sipping on my go go juice” which is just part of the chorus, but I think it adds to the fun of the chorus.
Another song that just doesn’t quite hit it with me is “Don’t Worry I’ll Make You Worry,” I’ve never been a big fan of slower songs in the first place but the lyrics and vocals can usually help boost the song up for me, like with “Couldn’t Make It Any Harder.” But this one just doesn’t really have either, I can’t even quite place specifically what makes me not like the song. I do enjoy the chorus, but that’s not enough for me to add the song to my playlist.
