The January 13 Chiefs v. Dolphins Game set a record for 4th coldest NFL game ever. This is a rare thing to see in our lifetime because of how hard these records are to break. The coldest game goes all the way back to 1967.
The 1967 game was so cold that it was nicknamed The Ice Bowl. It was played by the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers on New Year’s Eve. The temperature, even though it seems normal here in Missouri in the past few years, was -13 degrees with a wind chill of a terrible -48 degrees.
The now 4th coldest game had a temp. of -4, and a wind chill of -18 at kickoff that dropped throughout the game. For the Dolphins, a team from Florida, that must have been about 70 degrees too cold.
The Chiefs however, were well prepared for the devastating cold. In 2016, The Chiefs installed a 2.2 million dollar field heating system that heats the turf on the field. They also provided gas heaters and heated blankets for players. The game was so cold that Chiefs Coach Andy Reid had literal icicles on his mustache. During a collision during the game, quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ helmet cracked across the front because of the way the temperature was affecting the metal.
