In February the theater department here at Marshfield performed their spring play, “The Boys Next Door.” The play is about four men with various mental disabilities living together in a group home with their caretaker, Jack, coming over to check on them.

I personally enjoyed the play a lot and found it both funny and really sad. There were things said in the play that I definitely didn’t think they’d say, especially since it’s a school play, but I thought it really added to the play and made certain scenes more impactful.

This play was also the last play that Greg Holtschneider will be doing here at the high school. According to the playbill, “The Boys Next Door” was also the first play that he did when he first started working at the high school.

Closer to the end of the play, the character that Holtschneider played, Jack, leaves the rest of the main characters and moves on with his life, similar to what he’s doing now with this being his last year at Marshfield. I think the symbolism there is really cute. It could just be me interpreting things differently but I do like the idea of it a lot.

The play has long passed but I still think that the play was great and it had a nice meaning. There were a lot of really funny moments, but there were also moments where I wanted to bawl my eyes out. I would still absolutely love to see it again if I had the chance even after all of that.
