On November 13, students were given a special day dedicated to them and their development. Guest speaker Joe Beckman was invited as well as sponsors and volunteers who were all invited to help attend the Resume Workshop where industry professionals helped students create and revise resumes.
The day started off with the theater production of “The Music Man” as the Renaissance performance. Students that were eligible were able to watch it first through third hour, then were released into their fourth hour to celebrate World Kindness Day, where the teachers administered a lesson about positivity and kindness. Each student was given a slip of paper to write down something they are thankful for. These slips were joined together to create a chain on the Commons’ stairwell.
Once fifth hour started, the resume prep started. This helps students by setting them up for when they have to begin applying for jobs that might set up their careers. Student organizations such as JAG already have had experience with this, so they were able to take it to the next level, while others were just getting started. Those who had specific career paths were given the opportunity to have a session specified just for them.
In each sixth hour class, they worked on their ICAPs. ICAPs are a tool used by students to plan their high school courses and what they plan on doing after graduation. Many students were able to attended specialized sessions based on their career interests.
This was followed up by an assembly led by Beckman where he spoke about how every individual is important. He discussed mental health issues and how everyone struggles. He provided resources and real life experiences to make sure no student felt alone in their struggles.
That night, the school hosted a Joe Beckman Community Night where parents and students could meet up with Beckman and connect with the community. He had copies of his book that he was offering to those who came, and he provided resources for people who needed them.
