Once Upon a Mattress

This year’s first musical ‘Once Upon a Mattress’ consisted of three showings from November 17-19. ‘Once upon a mattress’ is a Broadway original. The first ever showing of Once Upon a Mattress was in May of 1959, the play is a comedic spin off of the children’s fairy tale, “The Princess and the Pea.”
The story follows Princess Winnifred (Cayley Dooly, grade 12) who is competing for the hand of Prince Dauntless (Gunnar Mohn, grade 12). We also see the struggle between Sir Harry (Ian Tompson, grade 10) and Lady Larkin (Bryna Norman, grade 12).
The showing Friday of ‘Once Upon a Mattress’ was comedic and engaging. With loving characters and some not so much. Almost everything was taken on by the students from the announcements at the beginning of the play to the construction of the stage props. They made their hard work visible in how they executed the play. All of the students had been working on the showing of this musical for 3 months until actually performing it, but the students could not have done this play without the leadership crew.
The leadership crew is as follows:
Juliana Beatie- Beatie is the choir teacher at MHS and was the music director. She has helped direct and even participated in many other musicals.
Kaleb Patterson- Patterson is the music teacher at the Junior High. He was in charge of choreographing. He has also helped with more MHS productions.
Greg A. Holtschneider- Also known as “Mr. H” has been teaching theater at MHS since 1999. This is his 40th show he’s directed at MHS. And will be his last, as he is retiring after this year.
