As the end of high school is coming to a close for seniors they still have one last and very big project for those in English 4 – Senior Project.

So what is a senior project?

English teacher Nicki Roy explains, “A senior project is a year-long project that allows students choice in how they are able to connect the traditional English curriculum. Students choose the area and direction of their projects as long as they fall into one of three categories: benefit to self, benefit to community, or benefit to school. Within their project, students research, work with a mentor, create a product as a natural extension of their learning and create a multimedia presentation which they give to a panel of judges at the community showcase on April 18. Many of these elements were already present in the English 4 and English 4 Scholars classes, but I wanted to find a way to connect it all and bring real-world experience to students while also allowing them more choice in how they fulfilled the required standards.”

Senior projects have been around for two years and Mrs. Roy says there are 106 students that are currently doing one. Students are able to choose what they want to do and to show what they are passionate about.

Roy says, “Last year there were many great projects. We had a student create a documentary; a student who held a benefit dinner for Choices Pregnancy Care Center and raised 3,000 dollars; a student who gave piano lessons to a younger student; and so many more. There are lots of others.”
