People Respecting Individuality, Diversity and Equality, or PRIDE, is a new club that will meet every second and fourth Tuesday each month in Kim Plemmons room starting January 9.
A MHS senior started the club as part of his senior project because “in such a conservative town a lot of LGBTQ people feel isolated and I want to help them.” The senior said that the club is “a social group and support group” and that the goal of the club is “to promote acceptance.”
The club is open to any and all MHS students that are not failing any classes and agree to the random drug testing forms. In the MHS PRIDE constitution it says, “Joining the club is not a statement about your preferences; rather it is a statement of your commitment to human rights and dignity.”
One of the senior’s many obstacles was finding a name for the club. After a few pitched ideas he found PRIDE on the internet and decided to choose it because “everything it stands for is not arguable.”
